Start with the likely cable routes

Before using a detector, map sockets, switches, fused spurs, wall lights and the consumer unit route. IET material on BS 7671 describes prescribed zones within 150 mm of the top of a wall or an adjoining corner, plus horizontal or vertical routes to an electrical accessory. Those are places where a concealed cable may be expected — they are not safe places to drill.

Look on both sides of a thin wall and ask whether a kitchen, bathroom or later extension could have changed the original layout. For someone renovating an older home, the unknown alteration is often more important than the age of the building.

A layered check before drilling

  1. Inspect the room. Mark accessories, visible wiring, pipe entries and recent repair patches.
  2. Mark prescribed zones. Treat the horizontal and vertical lines from accessories, plus the top and corner zones, as higher risk.
  3. Use a suitable cable detector. Follow its instructions, keep it flat and scan the whole fixing area rather than one drill point.
  4. Cross-scan. Move left to right, then up and down so the detector crosses a possible cable path.
  5. Repeat uncertain responses. Draw a no-drill band around broad, intermittent or conflicting indications.
  6. Resolve the risk. Move the fixing or consult a competent person if the route cannot be established.

HSE guidance says some cable detectors will not find a wire carrying a small current and advises stopping work when in doubt. That is why “no beep” must never be translated into “no cable”.

Why a live-wire scan can miss a cable

Live-wire modes detect electrical conditions, not a visible object. Bosch’s operating guidance for a current UK detector explains that the cable must be live, its 50–60 Hz signal must reach the tool, and damp walls, metallic foil or poor earthing conditions can prevent or blur detection. Other models have their own limits.

  • A lightly loaded or de-energised cable may not produce the expected live-wire response.
  • Foil-backed insulation and conductive surfaces can mask or spread a signal.
  • Nearby metal may be detected without identifying whether it is cable protection, a pipe or a fixing.
  • Plastic plumbing may produce no metal response at all.
Stop condition: if the fixing falls in a likely cable route, the detector response is inconsistent, or you cannot make the supply safe and verify it competently, do not drill.

What to do with a clear-looking result

Use it as one piece of evidence. Re-check the room layout, scan from another direction and choose a fixing position away from likely services. The HSE advises looking for wiring and other hazards, consulting plans where available and using a suitable detector only when competent to do so.

Are the 150 mm cable zones safe places to drill?

No. They are prescribed routes where concealed cables may be present near wall tops and corners. Horizontal and vertical lines from electrical accessories should also be treated as higher risk.

Can a detector find a cable when the power is off?

Some professional scanners can detect non-live objects, but a live-wire mode normally depends on an energised signal. Check the exact model; do not assume an absent live indication means no cable.

What should I do if a detector gives changing results?

Widen the scan, cross the area from another direction and mark it as uncertain. If the result still conflicts with the room layout, move the fixing or stop and consult a competent person.
